[Interview] Ablenews – Interview with Ku Hye Sun & Lee Chun Hee, the ambassador of PDFF

Persons with Disabiity Film Festival (PDFF) has been around since 2000. This year, the festival received endorsement from Ministry of Culture,Sports and Tourism; Film Council; and the US Embassy. (hmmm, US Embassay also endorsed it!!!) The festival will occur from September 23~27.

Ku Hye Sun: “I feel honored to be an ambassador for such a precious movie festival.”

Reporter writes that: For the last 4 months, Ku Hye Sun has completed and/or produced movie script, art exhibition materials, her own songs, various “give” functions, judge for the 9th Jecheon International Music & Film Festival. She had been extremely busy. On top of that, she readily made, appeared and used sign language for the official trailer for the PDFF. The trailer’s scene of Ku Hye Sun signing inside the water created much stir.

Ku: “I was tense a great deal as it required filming under water. (laughter) But, fortunately, we had no accidents. I feel that the trailer expressed well what I wanted to say. I wanted to show that lives of those with disabilities are no different than the rest of us. When we deeply fall in love, we may not hear or see anything. Their situation has been likened to the state of falling in love and I wanted try to give a message that we love such a person.”

Ku Hye Sun says that she has a big interest in the persons with disabilities since she debut as a director. She made Peach Tree movie last year about Siamese twins.

Ku Hye Sun: “That was the stage in my life when I had identity crisis. That led to a scenario dealing with issues around ambivalence and contradictions in people. I wanted to tell a story about brothers with two heads and how they grew up. They may just look different on the outside, but they lived their lives holding even greater love.”

Even though Ku Hye Sun wanted to share a movie that the lives of disabled persons are no different than ours, the real disabled persons still have great difficulty watching movies due to environmental limitations. Ku Hye Sun really felt bad about this situation.

Ku Hye Sun: “As members of this society, it is normal and natural that we must help persons with bodily limitations. However, I think it wrong to treat them separately and differently or to create unnecessary ideas/information about them.”

Ku Hye Sun: “We need to socialize in one place and to recognize that we are not different from eahc other. I feel that such recognition/awareness is most important. As a promotion ambassador of PDFF, I hope to make improvement about such awareness.”

Lee ChunHee

(sorry to Lee ChunHee fans…I am not going to trans as specifically.)
But what I really do like about Lee ChunHee’s interview is that he brought out the issues for the families of the persons with disabilities. He once appeared in a movie called “Bobby” where he played a brother to an older brother with intellectual disability. He said that before he was selected to be an ambassador, he was not aware nor interested in the limitations that disabled persons must face to even watch a movie. He hopes to make more impact as an ambassador.
